El Perelló - Tourism - Agriculture
Until the beginning of the 20th century, fishing was the main economic sector of the population but, little by little, agriculture was prevailing. Currently, the Perellonera economy revolves around the primary sector, agriculture, and tertiary, tourism.
- Tourism:
The development of the tourist sector in El Perelló began in the second half of the 19th century, at which time the town began to attract important families from the Swedish and Valencian bourgeoisie who came to it to spend the summer. This tourism also began to change the urban physiognomy with the construction of more stately houses that contrasted with the humble barracks of the perelloneros.
This development continued throughout the 20th century. It is characterized by being a family tourism from Sueca, Valencia, Alzira, Algemesí, the Basque Country and Madrid. During the decade of the 60-70s, the presence of international tourism was notable, most of these tourists were of French and German origin. Today, the presence of international tourism is a little less.
It is a very important sector for the population's economy as it is also a catalyst for others such as real estate, hospitality and local commerce.
At the accommodation level, El Perelló has a campsite, Camping San Pascual, and a hostel located in the center has recently been opened. But, the vast majority of accommodation focuses on the rental and purchase of second homes.
- Agriculture:
It is the other great economic engine. It began to boom at the beginning of the 20th century, replacing fishing, which until then had been the main economic source. It employs more than half the population. It is a dynamic sector. Today its regulation is the responsibility of the Cooperative that is responsible for its distribution and marketing, although there are farmers not affiliated with it.
The perellonero agricultural sector is mainly focused on two types of crops: tomato and Chinese vegetables.
The tomato from El Perelló enjoys a very important gastronomic recognition, it is a product that has been greatly supported with the celebration of the Tomato Fair that is held every year at the beginning of June. It is a product appreciated for its taste and quality.
Chinese vegetables are the other star product of the perellonero field. There are many farmers who combine both. El Perelló is one of the main providers of oriental food restaurants in both Spain and Europe.
