History of El Perelló

El Perelló is a Minor Local Entity that belongs to the municipality of Sueca. Its origin is relatively modern since it dates from the early nineteenth century when a small group of families, who were on the part of the shore that is now El Perellonet, decided to cross it and settle in what is now El Perelló.

The town's urban development began to take place in the second half of the 19th century. In 1856, the Sueca city council ordered the completion of the first urban plan in order to put order when building houses. It is at this time, when El Perelló begins to be considered a favorite summer destination for the agrarian bourgeoisie of Sueca and Valencia mainly.

During the 20th century, El Perelló continued its expansion. From this century we can highlight two important events.

During the Civil War, between 1937 and 1938, El Perelló became a rearguard and refuge area. Many refugees came to him, the most prominent being the children's colony founded by Ángel Llorca with the help of Justa Freire. This neighborhood was located on Calle San Pascual and carried out important work, not only humanitarian, but also pedagogical. In it, Ángel Llorca launched his educational plan and that made the El Perelló colony not only become a model for the rest of those that were founded in the country, it also served as an example for England and France during the Second World War. To get the children to overcome the trauma of the war, in the Perellonera neighborhood they promoted recreational activities such as games and drawing. These drawings can be seen in the National Library and Columbia University since JA Weissberger took them to New York, in 1937 he opened an exhibition at Lord & Taylor, located on Fifth Avenue, many of these drawings were sold for a dollar and they stayed in the United States at the end of the war.

Parallel to this colony, El Perelló was also a diplomatic refuge. Here many embassies and consulates were installed, both in the urban area and in the El Socarrat area.

But, without a doubt, the most important date in the recent history of El Perelló is December 5, 1999. On that day, the town became E.A.T.I.M. (now called a Minor Local Entity). At present, El Perelló continues to depend on the Sueca city council at the budgetary level, but it is the El Perelló city council that manages its budget and the powers transferred.
